The neighborhood of Hampden owes much of its growing popularity to its histroic and architectural charm. A key componenet of the Hampden Village Main Street (HVMS) program is to enhance the vitality of the area through a preservation-based plan to upgrade the visual quality of the business district, building upon the historic character of the community.
Projects to consider as part of the improvement program include painting, installation of awnings, repairs to storefronts and front building facades, widows and masonry, enhanced lighting, and rehabilitation or replacaement of architectual details. While Formstone removal may also be included as a facade improvement, applicants are encouraged to keep Formstone that is in good condition as it is a distinctive part of Baltimore's unique heritage.
The goals of the program are to encourage sensitive design and the use of quality materials and workmanship as well as promote the "hip/trendy/funky" nature of the business district. An additional goal is to preserve those buildings that are listed in or are eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.
